Sunderland vs Aston Villa: prediction & betting odds 21 September 2025

The Matchday 5 Premier League clash between Sunderland and Aston Villa will take place on September 21 at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland vs. Aston Villa: prediction, betting odds, and statistics.

Sunderland

Regis Le Bris's side has been a pleasant surprise, unexpectedly sitting in 7th place in the league table. The team has made the most of their home support, defeating West Ham (3-0) and Brentford (2-1) in the new season. While they haven't scored away yet, they did earn a point in their last match, drawing 0-0 with Crystal Palace.

  • Before the last match, the club had not drawn in the Premier League and Championship for 11 games (4 wins and 7 losses).
  • Exactly two or three goals have been scored in 4 of Sunderland's last 5 games in England's top two divisions.
  • At least one team failed to score in 7 of the club's last 10 matches in the Premier League and Championship.

Predicted lineup for Sunderland (4-3-3)

Robin Rüf – Nordi Mukiele, Omar Alderete, Reinildo Mandava, Tray Hame – Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra – Chemsdine Talbi, Simon Adingra, Wilson Isidor.

Aston Villa

The Birmingham side has been the biggest disappointment at the start of the season. The team suffered two defeats and also drew 0-0 with Newcastle and Everton. As a result, they find themselves in the relegation zone with two points. Interestingly, the club hasn't scored in five consecutive Premier League matches. Additionally, Aston Villa lost to Brentford on penalties in the League Cup midweek.

  • The club's winless streak in the league stands at 5 matches (2 draws and 3 losses).
  • At least one team failed to score in Aston Villa's last 8 Premier League games.
  • No more than two goals have been scored in 7 of Aston Villa's last 8 Premier League matches.

Predicted lineup for Aston Villa (5-3-2)

Emiliano Martinez – Lamar Bogarde, Tyrone Mings, Matty Cash, Lucas Digne, Ezri Konsa – Emiliano Buendía, John McGinn, Youri Tielemans – Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers.

Midfielders Boubacar Kamara and Ross Barkley, along with defender Andres Garcia, will miss the match due to injuries.

Sunderland vs. Aston Villa: Match Prediction

The hosts were expected to be among the bottom three, while the visitors were anticipated to be in the European competition spots. However, after four rounds, the situation is reversed: Sunderland is near the top, while the Birmingham side is among the bottom three. I expect Unai Emery's team to struggle to climb out of this position, as they've only managed to earn two points despite a favorable schedule.

Regis Le Bris's side will aim to maximize their home advantage. As we can see, they handle mid-table and lower-ranked Premier League teams well at home, and it will be interesting to see how they fare against European competition representatives from the Premier League. So far, Sunderland has two home wins in the Premier League with a total of five goals scored. Meanwhile, Aston Villa has failed to win or even score in three consecutive away matches.

My prediction – Sunderland win or draw

Sunderland — Aston Villa betting tips 21 September 2025

Before the campaign, the expectation was that Sunderland would be in the relegation zone from the off, while Aston Villa were tipped to push for Europe. In reality, it has been the other way round — the newly-promoted team have been a pleasant surprise.

Sunderland sit seventh and are just two points off second-placed Arsenal. The team have a positive goal difference (+2) and have lost only once so far, and that was an unlikely defeat — a 0:2 reverse against fellow newly-promoted Burnley. In the previous round, the team held FA Cup and FA Community Shield holders Crystal Palace to 0:0. It was always going to be hard to expect more against opponents so solid at the back. It looks like a near €200m spending spree is paying off. Granit Xhaka has been particularly steady in midfield, Nordi Mukiele has not put a foot wrong in defence, and goalkeeper Robin Roefs kept Sunderland in the game against Crystal Palace with six saves.

Aston Villa look decent at the back (averaging one conceded per game), yet they have issues in attack. They have still not scored in the Premier League and only found the net for the first time in the EFL Cup: 1:1 against Brentford. The goal did not help in the end, as Brentford went through after a penalty shoot-out. Yes, key player Amadou Onana has been dealing with a hamstring issue early in the season, but he is less central to their attacking play.

With Aston Villa struggling like this, possibly without Amadou Onana, Sunderland clearly have every chance of at least a draw. The extra midweek fixture Aston Villa played hardly helps their cause. Our bet is Double Chance — Sunderland or Draw.
